Directors

Damian grew up in Bern and discovered his passion for acting during a high-school exchange year in the USA. He appeared on stage and in film in Switzerland, then left to pursue a four-year professional training program at the Munich Film Academy, graduating with a certificate in acting for both stage and screen. Damian returned to Switzerland in 2024 and is once again diving into the world of drama, last seen on stage in Upstage’s production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This production is his debut as a director.

Myriam grew up in a Swiss-German family near Vevey. During her studies of French literature in Lausanne she performed with several French-speaking theatre groups. Since moving to Bern in 2016, Myriam has been a regular cast or crew member in Upstage, as well as performing in German and Swiss-German with the Zytglogge Theater Bern. She is an experienced director, having directed three Upstage plays as well as several plays for the Berner Liebhaberbühne. Since 2025 Myriam is also the artistic director of Theater im Schlosskeller in Fraubrunnen.
About the Play
Dr. Frankenstein by Selma Dimitrijevic is a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic, placing a female scientist, Victoria Frankenstein, at the story’s centre.
Set in the 1830s, the plot follows Victoria, a brilliant and driven woman, who defies her family’s advice and leaves her father, her sister Elizabeth, the housekeeper Mary, and the maid Justine to pursue medical studies and scientific research in Bavaria, as women are barred from such education in England. In Germany, Victoria works on her technique for bringing a dead body back to life, having first succeeded with a rabbit. Determined to defeat mortality, she succeeds in reanimating a corpse, creating the Creature.
As the Creature comes to life and threatens her, Victoria unsuccessfully attempts to restrain it — it overpowers her and escapes. Elizabeth’s fiancé, Henry, brings Victoria back home to recover, but the Creature finds her again. Wounded, rejected, and mistreated, the Creature longs for the only person who does not despise him. Yet after the tragic death of her young brother, William, even Victoria no longer believes in the Creature’s innocence.
Our adaptation relocates the Dr. Frankenstein story to postwar Europe, where the aftermath of World War II echoes the story’s moral and emotional turmoil. The atmosphere of the late 1940s — characterized by hope and reconstruction but also by grief, guilt and restitution — becomes the lens through which Victoria’s pursuit of knowledge is seen. Her scientific ambition reflects an era questioning its faith in progress and confronting its ethical boundaries. The Creature in Dr. Frankenstein serves as a warning that new knowledge without moral boundaries can have damaging consequences, inviting us to consider how invention and responsibility intertwine, and how every act of creation carries the shadow of its maker.
About the Authors

Selma Dimitrijevic (1975) is a writer, director, and dramaturg based in Wales. Originally from Croatia, with a background in theatre that began in a childhood surrounded by ballet and stage artists, she is best known for her work as Artistic Director of Greyscale Theatre Company, where she specializes in bold, political theatre and radical adaptations of classic texts such as “Hedda Gabler” and “Dr. Frankenstein”.
Her career spans internationally and includes work as dramaturg on the touring musical “The Last Ship” by Sting, as well as commissions for major theatres like Northern Stage, The Traverse, and Bath Theatre Royal. As a librettist, she has contributed to contemporary opera projects and is actively developing film screenplays alongside her celebrated stage work.

Mary Shelly (1797–1851) was a British novelist best known for writing Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, which she wrote when she was just 18 years old. The novel was born out of a ghost story writing contest while she and other famous writers, including Lord Byron and her future husband Percy Shelley, were staying in Switzerland during a rainy summer. It was first published anonymously in London in 1818 when Mary was 20, with her name appearing in the 1821 edition.
Beyond her famous novel , Shelly was a prolific writer who authored several other novels, as well as short stories, poems and travel literature. Her diverse literary output reflects her engagement with political, philosophical, and social issues of her time, making her an important figure in Romantic and Gothic literature.
