About the Play

The original Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson follows the story of Gabriel John Utterson, a London lawyer investigating strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The tale explores the duality of human nature as Jekyll, through a scientific experiment, creates a potion that transforms him into the malevolent Hyde.

Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation offers a fresh and psychologically complex interpretation of the classic story. The plot follows Gabriel Utterson and his friend Enfield as they uncover disturbing details about the mysterious figure, Mr. Hyde, who lives behind a red door and seems to be connected to Dr. Jekyll. As Utterson and Enfield investigate further, they confront Jekyll, who is evasive about his relationship with Hyde.

Meanwhile, the story introduces Sir Danvers, an influential surgeon with questionable morals, who becomes a thorn in Jekyll’s side. Jekyll, who holds high moral standards, is deeply repulsed by Danvers’ unethical behavior and challenges his reputation. As the narrative unfolds, Elisabeth, a chambermaid, gets to know Hyde and becomes deeply entangled in the story, finally uncovering troubling truths about Jekyll and Hyde’s connection. Jekyll’s control over Hyde steadily weakens, leading to tragic consequences and culminating in a confrontation between Jekyll and Hyde.

The play is notable for having multiple actors portray Hyde, reflecting the fragmented nature of Jekyll’s inner conflict. As all actors play multiple roles, this also reinforces the sense that Hyde exists within everyone, a part of the darker, repressed aspects of human nature.

About the Authors

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. Born in Edinburgh, he battled poor health throughout his life but still managed to produce a prolific body of work. He is best known for his adventure novels and Gothic fiction, including Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He also wrote notable works of poetry, such as A Child’s Garden of Verses and travel literature like Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes.

Despite his relatively short life of 44 years, Stevenson’s writing had a significant impact on literature. His works criticized Victorian society’s moral and cultural norms, raising many important questions, and his exploration of human psychology and moral complexity, especially in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, had a strong influence on modern literature and philosophy.

Jeffrey Hatcher is an American playwright and screenwriter known for his adaptations and original works. Apart from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Hatcher has adapted several other classic works for the stage, including Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw and An Unsocial Socialist by George Bernard Shaw. Hatcher has received numerous awards and grants, and was recently noted as one of the most-produced playwrights in America, with 13 plays in production.
